Converting PNG to JPEG trades a lossless image for a compressed one, and for a photograph that trade is almost always worth taking. The same picture usually comes back at a fraction of its old weight while looking identical at normal viewing size. Each row shows you the before and after, so you can see exactly what the conversion bought you.
JPEG has no way to store transparency. Every see-through pixel is filled with white before the file is written, so a logo that floated on nothing comes out sitting on a white square. This is the single most common surprise here, and there is no setting that avoids it. If transparency is the reason the image was a PNG in the first place, this is the wrong conversion.
JPEG works by discarding detail your eye is unlikely to miss. On a photograph of a real scene that is a wonderful bargain. On hard edges it is a poor one. Screenshots full of small text, line drawings, charts, and flat colour logos pick up faint smudging around the edges, the kind you only notice once you zoom in, and then cannot stop noticing. A rough rule that holds up well is this. If the PNG is a picture of something real, JPEG is the better file to keep. If it is a picture of a screen, keep the PNG.
PNG stores every pixel exactly as it was, and photographs are made of millions of pixels that never quite repeat. That is why a phone screenshot of a photo can be several times larger than the photo itself. PNG is doing its job perfectly, it is just the wrong job for a photograph.

Some detail is discarded, though on a photograph it is genuinely hard to spot. Flat graphics and small text show it far sooner than photos do.
