Converting PNG to AVIF is mostly about size. AVIF squeezes an image far harder than PNG can while still looking close to the original, and unlike a JPEG conversion it holds on to the transparency. For anything headed to a web page, that combination is hard to beat.
AVIF supports a full alpha channel, so a cutout stays a cutout and a soft shadow keeps its soft edge. This is the reason to pick AVIF over JPEG when the image was a PNG for a reason. Icons, logos, product shots on no background, all of them arrive intact.
Big, on almost any photographic image. Flat artwork with few colours saves less, because PNG was already efficient at exactly that kind of picture, and once in a while a tiny icon comes out about the same. The size shown on each row after conversion tells you the real answer for your file rather than an average.
Current web browsers display AVIF happily. Desktop software is patchier. Plenty of older photo viewers, office suites and design tools will look at an .avif and shrug, so it is a format for publishing rather than for handing to someone who has to edit it.
AVIF encoding is genuinely heavy work, and the encoder has to be ready before the first image starts. Once it is warm the rest of the queue moves along steadily. A large batch is worth starting and leaving alone.

Yes, it is a lossy format, though at the settings used here the difference is very hard to see on a photograph. Sharp text and thin lines are where it shows first.
You can, and the transparency comes back with it. What was discarded during compression does not, so treat the AVIF as the published copy rather than the master.
Usually smaller at the same quality, yes. WebP has wider support in older software, so the right pick depends on where the file is going more than on the numbers.
Small images with flat colour are the usual culprit, since PNG already compresses those very well. AVIF wins on detail, not on simplicity.
