A JFIF file is a JPEG file. Converting PNG to JFIF produces the same compressed image a JPEG conversion would, saved under an older extension that a handful of systems still ask for by name. If something has rejected your upload and told you it wants .jfif, this is what it means.
JFIF is the name of the file structure the JPEG standard actually defines. Almost every JPEG you have ever opened is a JFIF file underneath, it just carries a friendlier extension. Windows occasionally saves images from a browser with the .jfif ending, which is where most people meet it for the first time and assume something has gone wrong. Nothing has.
Because the file inside really is a JPEG, none of the alpha channel comes along. Transparent regions are filled with white and the picture is flattened to a plain rectangle. There is no way round that short of choosing a different target format, so if you were relying on a transparent background, stop here and pick WebP or AVIF instead.
Most image software opens one without complaint. The ones that refuse are usually refusing the name rather than the contents, and changing the extension to .jpg by hand fixes them instantly. That is worth knowing before you go looking for a converter to undo the conversion.

Yes. Photoshop reads it as the JPEG it is. A few older or more specialised programs go by extension alone and need it renamed to .jpg first.
It comes from a registry entry that maps the JPEG type to that extension, and browsers follow it when saving. It is a naming quirk, not a different picture.
No. Once the alpha channel is flattened to white it is gone, and converting back to PNG only gives you a white rectangle. Keep the PNG.
For a photograph, dramatically so. For a flat logo or a screenshot the saving is much smaller, and now and then the .jfif comes out larger than the PNG.
