AVIF is newer and much harder working than JPEG, so a JPG to AVIF conversion usually produces a noticeably smaller file at similar visible quality. On a page carrying a dozen photographs that adds up to a real difference in how quickly the page appears.
This is worth being clear about. Your JPG has already thrown detail away, and AVIF cannot put it back. What AVIF does is describe the picture you have far more efficiently. Convert from the largest, cleanest JPG you own rather than from something already squeezed hard, and the result holds up much better.
Detailed photographs with lots of texture, foliage, crowds, fabric. Those are exactly the images JPEG struggles with and AVIF handles well. A flat illustration or a screenshot that was small to begin with may barely move, and occasionally grows. The finished size next to the original tells you which one you got.
Web pages, yes. Every current browser displays them. Attaching one to an email or dropping it into a document or a presentation is where it goes wrong, because a lot of desktop software has never heard of the format. Keep the JPG for anything that has to be opened by a person rather than a browser.

The format supports it, but a JPG has no transparency to carry across, so the AVIF comes out fully opaque. You would need a source with an alpha channel.
Recent iPhones and Android phones display them in the browser and usually in the gallery too. Older devices may show nothing at all.
Most office software still refuses. Convert a copy back to JPG for that and keep the AVIF for the web.
Compare the two numbers on the row before you download. Now and then, on small flat images, the AVIF is the bigger file and is not worth keeping.
