Use JPG for photos. Use PNG when you need transparency or crisp text and logos. Use WebP whenever the platform allows it, because it usually gives you the smallest file at the same visual quality as the other two. That one decision alone fixes a big chunk of slow loading websites.

JPG compresses your image by throwing away information your eyes probably won't notice anyway. Tiny color shifts, subtle noise in busy areas, that kind of thing. It's a tradeoff, and for photos it's a good one, because photographs already have so much natural detail that a little bit of loss just disappears.
That's the whole reason product photography, portraits, and anything with gradients or lighting still lean on JPG. It handles complexity well.
But try saving a logo as JPG. Zoom in on the text. You'll see fuzzy edges and weird color halos around the letters, because compression doesn't know the difference between acceptable noise and sharp intentional lines. It just compresses everything the same way.

Real world testing generally shows WebP images landing noticeably smaller than an equivalent JPG at a similar visual quality, and the gap tends to be even bigger for PNG style graphics with transparency.
For a long time, people avoided WebP because of browser support. That excuse is basically dead now. Every major browser, including Safari, supports it, so unless you're dealing with some ancient system nobody uses anymore, there's rarely a real reason to skip it.
The only genuine friction point is that some older tools or specific workflows still expect JPG or PNG by default, so you might need to convert a file here and there. Small price for the speed you get back.
If it's a photo, reach for WebP first, and fall back to JPG only if the platform rejects it. For logos and icons that need transparency, WebP again usually does the job while staying lighter than PNG, though PNG is still the safer call if you specifically need a lossless brand asset for print or archival purposes.
Screenshots are a judgment call. If sharpness matters more than anything, PNG wins. If you want a solid balance between clarity and file size, WebP handles that fine too.
One place where this advice bends a little is government forms, job application portals, or size restricted upload systems. A lot of these older platforms only accept JPG or PNG, sometimes with painfully specific KB limits. Always check what the portal actually wants before assuming WebP will work there, because random third party systems are hit or miss on this.
Picture a small blog running product photos around 800kb each as PNG. Same images saved as WebP could easily drop to a fraction of that size without any visible difference to a normal reader. Multiply that across ten images on one page, and you start to understand why format choice alone can be the difference between a fast site and a slow one.
