The .jfi extension is JFIF with the last letter cut off, and JFIF is simply how JPEG files have always been laid out. So PNG to JFI produces a standard JPEG carrying an unusual three letter name, which is normally what a picky system on the other end has asked for.
People arrive at both from the same place, and a validator matching on exact text does not treat them as interchangeable. If you still have the error message in front of you, read the ending it named character by character before converting a hundred files to the wrong one.
The image is compressed with JPEG, which throws away detail it judges you will not see, and any transparency is filled in with white. Photographs take that well. Diagrams, screenshots and anything with crisp edges take it less well, and there is nothing here to soften the trade with.
Photographic files usually collapse to a fraction of what they were. Flat graphics often barely move and occasionally grow. Both figures sit on each row, so the ones that were not worth converting are easy to spot afterwards.

It is a shortened spelling of JFIF rather than a format of its own. The file inside follows the same rules either way.
