BMP is a plain, uncompressed bitmap format that Windows and a fair amount of older or specialized software still rely on. This tool writes your PNG out as a standard 24-bit BMP without you installing anything.
Two things are worth knowing before you convert. BMP files are big. Because nothing is compressed, a BMP is usually several times the size of the same PNG. And BMP has no transparency, so if your PNG had a see-through background, it gets filled in during the conversion.
The format sticks around because it's dead simple. Some legacy Windows programs, a few embedded and hardware tools, and certain image-processing setups expect a raw bitmap they can read pixel by pixel, with no decoding step in the way. If a program is refusing your PNG and asking for a BMP, this is the quick fix.

BMP stores every pixel uncompressed, while PNG squeezes the file down without losing quality. Same picture, much bigger file. That's just how BMP works.
No. BMP doesn't support transparency, so any see-through areas in the PNG are filled in when it converts.
Not at all. BMP is lossless, so every pixel from the PNG is preserved exactly. The file is just larger because it isn't compressed.
