How to Convert JPG To BMP

Worth being clear about one thing: converting a JPG to BMP doesn't add any quality back. Whatever compression the JPG already went through is baked in. What you get is that same image stored uncompressed, in a format that older editors and Windows utilities open without complaint.

Expect a much bigger file, too. A BMP holds every pixel with no compression at all, so it will dwarf the original JPG in size. That's normal for the format, not a sign anything went wrong.

Does converting to BMP improve my JPG's quality?

No. The JPG's compression is already locked in. BMP just stores that same image uncompressed. It can't recover detail the JPG dropped earlier.

Why is the BMP file so large?

BMP keeps every pixel with zero compression, so it's naturally much bigger than a JPG of the same image. That's expected.

When would I actually need a BMP?

Mostly for older Windows software, some hardware or embedded tools, and image-processing workflows that want a plain, uncompressed bitmap.
