PNG replaced GIF for still images a long time ago, and GIF to PNG is how you finish that move for a file you already have. The picture comes across as it is, in a format modern editors and design tools would much rather work with.
Only one frame is read. If the GIF was an animation, everything after the opening image stays behind in the original file, and what you download is a single still picture. That is often exactly what people want, and occasionally a surprise, so it is worth knowing before you convert a folder.
PNG can hold millions of shades and your GIF held 256. Converting lifts the ceiling for anything you do next, it does not repaint what was already flattened. Any banding in the GIF arrives in the PNG looking identical.
More often than you would expect. PNG compression is simply better, so flat graphics and screenshots frequently shrink on the way across. Detailed pictures can go the other way. Both numbers sit on the row, so there is no need to guess.
Colour ceiling lifted
Whatever you edit next is no longer limited to 256 shades.
Transparency carried across
A GIF's clear background stays clear in the PNG.

Not here. Each GIF produces one still image, and splitting an animation into frames needs a tool made for that job.
No. The jagged edge was created when the GIF was made, and PNG copies it faithfully rather than repairing it.
It is the same picture in a better container. Nothing improves, but nothing degrades from here either.
The first one. There is no way to pick a different moment, so crop the frame you want out of the animation beforehand.
