This rewrites a GIF as an AVIF file. Most people try GIF to AVIF for the weight saving, and on a detailed picture that saving is real, but two things about GIF decide whether you actually get it.
Only the first frame is read. Everything after it stays in the original file. So if the whole point of your GIF was the movement, a still image converter is not the tool for the job and you will want something built to handle frames.
AVIF was designed around photographs. A GIF holding a logo, an icon or a few lines of text is already about as compact as that sort of picture gets, and the structure AVIF wraps around it can cost more than the compression saves. That is why the finished size sits next to the original on every row.
GIF allows 256 colours per image. AVIF has no such ceiling, so from here the file can hold far more than it currently does. What it will not do is repaint the banding your GIF already has. Whatever was flattened stays flattened. The gain is simply that no further colour is lost from this point on.
Every current browser reads them. Away from the browser it thins out quickly, since a good number of photo viewers and older editors have never met the format, so AVIF sits happier on a web page than attached to a message.

The first one. There is no way to choose a different moment here, so pull the frame you want out of the animation first if it is not the opening one.
AVIF can store partly see through pixels, but a GIF never had any. A jagged cut out edge stays exactly as jagged as it was.
Yes, GIF is in the target list. A photograph pushed back into GIF will band again though, since the palette limit applies fresh each time.
Keep the GIF. That result means the image is flat and simple enough that AVIF has nothing much to compress, and PNG often beats both on that kind of graphic.
